No one really knows who invented the pancake, and no one can rightly claim that they did it. There are so many variations and foreign versions that it is almost impossible to trace down the very first pancake ever made. However, we do have a good idea as to what the first pancake might have been like. Researchers think that the first pancakes were a type of flatbread baked by nomads and cave dwellers on rocks situated over a campfire.(2) Some of the first “civilized” people who are known to have made pancakes are the Romans. They called them Alita Docia, or “another sweet.” Roman pancakes were made out of milk, eggs, and flour, and were occasionally topped with honey, fruit bits, cheese or meat. There is also evidence of pancakes being made by the ancient Native Americans. They called them nokehick, which literally means, “no cake.”These cakes were called “Indian Cakes” by the first white American settlers.(1)
